The landscape of the probiotics industry has changed drastically in recent years, with more firms creating products that seek to improve a wide variety of health conditions, aside from gut health.

These other conditions include skin problems such as eczema, or mood disorders such as depression.

This episode of Nutrition Asia, filmed at our Probiota Asia Summit in Singapore, explores the forces driving the use of probiotics for uses besides improving gut health.

Prof Luis Vitetta, director of medical research at Medlab Clinical, told NutraIngredients-Asia that the “gut microbiome is at the centre of modulating homeostasis, which is the balance of organ physiology, be it the liver, heart, skeletal muscles, adipose tissues, so it all begins in the gut.”

On the other hand, Dr Natarajan Ranganathan, founder and scientific director at Kibow Biotech pointed out that the medical community was still sceptical towards the credibility of research which looks at the use of probiotics for different health conditions.

However, there is a quicker acceptance among consumers, especially in the US, he added.
